Last fall, Young Money president and rap star, Lil Wayne, released the fifth installment in his Dedication mixtape series. William E. Ketchum III of HipHopDX, who reviewed the tape said: “To Wayne’s credit, Dedication 5 is the best the series has showcased since its legendary sequel from seven years ago, even if it pales in comparison. Occasionally, the YMCMB head honcho shows that he still has a portion of the skills that earned him his spot among rap’s elite. If he can find recapture the consistency from that same era, he won’t have to apologize to his fans for much longer.”
The first tape, The Dedication, was released in 2005, and helped continue Wayne’s transition from a southern rapper to a worldwide superstar. Over the course of the almost a decade Wayne continued to show his dedication by releasing four follow ups projects. While Wayne has hinted towards a sixth Dedication, Dedication 5, is currently the latest release in the series. The 29 track mixtape contains more than 10 guest appearances from other artists including Toronto native, The Weeknd, Chicago’s Chance the Rapper.
On track three, “Don’t Kill”, which borrows its instrumental from Kendrick Lamar’s “…Don’t Kill My Vibe,” Wayne raps, “We smoke that skunk that’s always smellin’ good/But why these snakes tryin’ to tongue kiss us?/Way too cool to die young, way too young to die sober.” You’re probably wondering what a mixtape that contains lyrics like that could possibly have in common with Dr. Phil. Well, with it’s September 1st release date, Dedication 5 shares the same birthday as the well known psychologist, author, and talk show host. Dr. Phil was born on September 1, 1954 in Vinita, Oklahoma and celebrated his 63rd birthday on the day Dedication 5 was released. While the two men may not know that they share this similarity, it just goes to show that no matter how different people can appear, a commonality can usually be found.
